International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March. IWD is a global day celebrating the historical, cultural and political accomplishments of women. At Wardell Dental Clinic, we want to help women everywhere achieve their greatest success in 2020—but that can’t happen if you aren’t healthy and strong.
Here are some tips to keep in mind for enjoying optimal overall health:
Eat a Balanced Diet
Nutrition is fuel. Power up your health by selecting nutrient-dense foods from all food groups. Here are some suggestions:
- Eight to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables (the more colourful, the better!).
- At least three-ounce equivalents of whole grains such as whole-grain bread, whole-wheat pasta, brown rice or oats.
- Three servings of fat-free or low-fat dairy products. These include milk, yoghurt or cheese; or opt for calcium-fortified plant-based alternatives.
- Five to 5-and-a-half ounce equivalents of protein. Consider lean cuts of meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, and seeds.
Move More
You may have heard sitting referred to as the new smoking. As many women have sedentary jobs that require sitting for extended periods, it’s crucial to get up and move. Try getting up every hour to take a quick walk around the office. Getting an adjustable standing desk is also a fantastic idea as you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the workday.
Looking for a low-impact, but a high-benefit form of exercise? Consider walking. It’s free and no expensive equipment is required. Aim to walk for 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. Of course, choose whatever form of fitness works best for you, whether it’s running, CrossFitting, cycling or something else.
Pay Attention to Your Pearly Whites
Just as you likely take your vehicle in to get it serviced at recommended intervals to keep it running smoothly, you should come in twice a year to keep your teeth tuned up.
The buildup that sits on your teeth between brushings will harden and form tartar. Tartar cannot be removed with your toothbrush or floss. Only a dental professional can take away this harder form of buildup. If you don’t have it treated, it can lead to tooth decay, infection, gum disease, tooth loss, and bone loss.
